As Kamala Harris surveys the many potential Democratic candidates for Vice-President, she would be well advised to strongly consider Josh Shapiro, the Governor of the important battleground state of Pennsylvania. Josh is well respected in Pennsylvania, and adding him to the Harris campaign for President as her Vice-Presidential candidate would surely deliver Pennsylvania to the Democratic team.
For those not familiar with the geographic ideological split in Pennsylvania, it is often described as a state with Philadelphia in the east, Pittsburgh in the west and Alabama in-between. It is that Alabama in-between that makes the state competitive. But Shapiro has a high approval rating throughout Pennsylvania based on his record as a well-respected, competent and dedicated Governor as well as his effective and dedicated service as the Pennsylvania Attorney General, where he lead the fight against Trump efforts to undermine the election in Pennsylvania through various tricks and challenges which were struck down by the courts.
Before we were married, my wife, Joan McClure, then a Senior Vice President of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, had a house in Rydal, Pennsylvania, a northern suburb of Philadelphia. Josh Shapiro bought a house a few houses down from Joan’s house, and on the day the moving trucks finished unloading at Josh’s new house, he walked down the street introducing himself to his new neighbors and asking for support in his run for Montgomery County Commissioner, an election he won.
Josh was a dynamic Montgomery County Commissioner and became Chairman of the Commission. In that role he put the County back on strong financial footing after years of budget deficits and underfunded public employee pensions. Before that position, he was elected a State Representative and served for several years.
Josh has been a strong leader and dynamic in each of his elective positions. Picking Josh Shapiro will undoubtedly deliver Pennsylvania to the Democratic column.
Josh is Jewish and attends religious services regularly. He is an attorney. If elected he would be the first Jewish Vice-President where he would complement President Harris, she of Black and East Asian heritage. They would make a winning team, highlighting competence, empathy for all Americans, dedication to improving lives for all Americans, both rich and poor and providing for national defense for the nation and a thoughtful foreign policy in this difficult world.
Most importantly, we will all be able to sleep soundly at night with President Harris and Vice-President Shapiro safeguarding the nation.
