Trump Joins Putin's Russia in Opposing U.N. Ukrainian Resolution
Trump Drags the U.S. to Support Putin and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine
On this the Third Anniversary of Putin’s unprovoked war on Ukraine, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution condemning the Russian attack on Ukraine. Ukraine has been our ally, so what did Trump do? He directed his U.N. Representative to oppose the Resolution so that Trump could show fealty to Putin and support Putin’s continued attacks on our ally, Ukraine.
Trump dragged the U.S. Government to reverse its longstanding opposition to Russia’s efforts to dominate the West. Does Trump conveniently forget that Russia created the Iron Curtain, as Churchill called it, to separate many countries in Europe from the western Post-War order by making many European countries subject to Russian control. Does Trump recall anything about the Hungarian uprising against the Soviet Union in the 1950s? Does Trump recall anything about the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, aided by the then Warsaw Pact countries under Soviet domination? Does Trump recall anything about Ronald Reagan’s speech to the Berlin people in 1987, known as the Brandenburg Gate speech, telling Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall?
Apparently, Trump has no recollection of those events, or if he does he misunderstands the U.S. position then as he now seeks to force the U.S. to be an ally of Putin’s Russia.
And what countries joined the U.S. and Russia in opposing the Ukrainian Resolution, condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine: North Korea, Belarus, Hungary, Israel, and Sudan and others aligned with Russia. China abstained.
Supporting the Ukrainian Resolution were Britain, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Norway, Finland, Sweden and the rest of Europe except for Hungary.
This is an amazing realignment where Trump is determined to align with authoritarian dictatorships, for what purpose we do not know. Perhaps it is Trump’s Axis of Authoritarian Dictators.
At the same time, Trump is pressuring Ukraine to give the U.S. 50% of their rare earth and other minerals. Trump is seeking a mafia style shakedown of Ukraine, similar to his shakedown of Zelenskyy in 2016 when Trump conditioned release of congressionally approved U.S. military assistance to Ukraine on Zelenskyy announcing an investigation of Joe Biden, even though there was not one.
Trump’s “agreement” on minerals does not even give Ukraine a security guarantee from Russian aggression. Zelenskyy remembers the agreement where Ukraine gave up its stockpile of nuclear weapons in exchange for a security agreement, but that agreement turned out to be nothing as Russia attacked.
Unfortunately, under intense pressure by Trump to seize Ukrainian minerals, Zelenskyy is reported to be close to signing the Trump shakedown. I hope he reconsiders as he is getting nothing for these valuable minerals when Ukraine will need substantial financial resources to rebuild Ukraine after the Russian missile and drone attacks and destruction.
It is a new world order and not one of most Americans making.
